This September community quilt makers and an internationally renowned artist will share a platform in Gloucester Cathedral as part of the Voices Gloucester annual Threads project. The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of talks by leading textile experts at the Cathedral, The Folk and at the Museum.

Please note that sessions are across multiple venues therefore bookings must be made per session – day tickets aren’t available this year.

SATURDAY 21 SEPTEMBER

9:30-10:30 Dr Sabina Fiebig of the University of Gloucestershire: Patch Works
There are hidden communities through Gloucester and a group of Polish women have come together to understand their place in Gloucester through their own quilting traditions.

11-12pm Making Community Quilts
Quilts are a unique form of artwork, made most often by women, and over the years they have been a signal of love, thrift and creativity. Voices Gloucester has commissioned a new series of quilts that explore the heritage and culture of Gloucester. A member of each quilt commission group will come and tell us about how and why they made their quilt.

1-2pm Deb McGuire: The Quilt Frame: An Emotional History
This talk uncovers the frame as a tool from quilt history, asking why it has been forgotten, and what it can teach us about how we made quilts in the past and how we might revive the tradition to make it relevant for today’s makers.

2:30-3:30pm Ferren Gibson: Women’s Work—Female textile artists in the 20th/21st century

4-5pm Dr Rose Sinclair of The Textiles Society: Dorcas Groups-Stitching support for Afro Caribbean communities

11-12pm Lizzie Johanssen-Hartley of the Museum Of Gloucester: Behind the Scenes of the Museum of Gloucester Costume Collection

1-3pm Catherine Reinhart /Jo Teague: Creative mending sessions (time tbc)
Invited workshop for community textile group leaders to take part in a Creative Mending Session to consider the links between mending quilts and mending/strengthening communities.

3:30 -5pm Lizzie Johanssen-Hartley of the Museum Of Gloucester: The Janet Arnold Collection
Join Head Curator Lizzie Johanssen-Hartley for a presentation on the museum’s historic clothing items that were immortalised in Janet Arnold’s Patterns of Fashion 1 & 2.
